Sony Breathes New Life Into PS2, Cuts Price To $99

Although the PS2, the older brother of PS3, is already nine years-old (which is quite impressive for a gaming console), it seems like the Sony’s gaming console will be around for two or three more years.

In a blog post on the official PlayStation blog, John Koller, Director, Hardware Marketing, has announced a new price for the old PlayStation 2.
“For the first time ever, PlayStation 2 will be offered at a price point under $100 (that’s $99.99 MSRP, to be exact), starting April 1!,” wrote Koller.

This is good move from Sony, especially since the sales of PS2 are still going strong, sometimes even better then those of its younger brother, PS3.
As even Koller noted the success of PlayStation 2 is based on the huge library of games (close to 1,900 titles) and its entertainment value.

Last month, according to the figures released by the NPD Group, Sony sold 131,000 PS2s and 276,00 PS3s. Also, a report put together by the Nielsen Media Research group, adding up the figures from January to October of 2008, stated in January this year that the PlayStation 2 is by far the most used console, with 30.2 percent.

However, the news might be a disappointment for those who were waiting a price drop for PS3. Sony’s next-gen console is still the priciest gaming console around.

There were some rumors earlier this year that we could see a price drop for PS3 until the end of 2009, but Sony officials stayed mum on the issue.
