Sony has recently unveiled its first ever Wi-Fi camera, the Cyber-shot $499 DSC-G3, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). However, this is not the first Wi-Fi equipped camera, but it will be the first Wi-Fi camera with a built-in Web browser. The device will allow users to access Wi-Fi networks that require them to view and accept terms from an HTML page before they can use the Wi-Fi network.
As for the integrated Web site, this is designed to streamline uploading pictures and video to popular sharing sites. In order to upload photos from the camera easy, Sony has created “The Easy Uploading Homepage,”a Web page formatted to match the size and resolution of the G3's screen for optimal viewing and navigation.
Sony will be helped by partners such as YouTube, Picasa or Shutterfly. Furthermore, this page will also allow users to input email address to send notifications of uploaded photos and video. The built-in browser has an address bar, plus back, forward, and zoom functionality for browsing any website the user wants.
The device's features include a slim build, a high-resolution, 3.5 inch 16:9 touchscreen (with 921,000 pixels), 4GB of built-in storage, a 4X optical zoom and 10.1 megapixel captures. Its Wi-Fi radio will be compatible with 802.11b/g networks. Unlike the T70,0 which uses a vertically sliding shield to cover and reveals the lens, the G3 will have a horizontally sliding lens shield which will also slide a panel out behind the LCD to reveal a grip and zoom in/out buttons.
The Cyber-shot G3 will be available for purchase at the SonyStyle Web site.
