Sony has also unveiled at CES what it claims to be the world's lightest netbook, weighing only 638g. The new Vaio P Series measures 120mm x 245mm x 19.8mm, just like a business envelope and roughly as thin as a cell phone. It also has a 8in X-Black 1600x768 screen that utilises Sony's Xbrite-Eco LCD technology.
The device carries an Intel Atom processor, 2GB of Ram and a 60GB hard drive. The range includes a model featuring a 128 GB SSD instead of a conventional hard drive, further reducing the weight to 618g. Among other features, we can also find mobile broadband, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS technologies with pre-installed maps for the US and Canada.
The standard three-cell battery should guarantee users about four hours of use out of a single charge and the six-cell battery should guarantee them about eight hours of use. In addition, the Vaio P Series will also give users the option of booting into Windows Vista or quickly accessing media features such as instant messaging, internet and music from the XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface.
The Vaio P Series Lifestyle PC will be available from February in red, dark green, white and black and it's expected to cost about $900 in the US and £849 in the UK. In Japan, the devices will go on sale on January the 16th, for about $1,082. Launch plans for other markets besides these will shortly be announced by local Sony offices.
Future plans revealed by Sony include making the Vaio P Series a fully functioning PC, even though it comes in such a small package. The Vaio P Series comes equipped with a full keyboard and screen large enough to maintain two windows without having to squint.
