Given Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt's history, which has been carefully chronicled by MTV's "The Hills" as well as various celebrity magazines and blogs, it's only natural that people are curious if the two really tied the knot or their "secret" wedding was just another publicity stunt.
News broke a couple of days ago that reality TV's most public couple took everyone by surprise by deciding to finally marry in the exotic setting of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where they were on vacation.
The first comments and reports about the ceremony described it as a sudden event, also very simple, with no family members in attendance, yet incredibly romantic, according to the newlyweds. The nuptials took place on November 20th after the two had several margaritas on the beach, at a chapel in the One and Only Palmilla Resort, the celebrity hotspot of choice in Cabo San Lucas.
Still in Mexico, Montag and Pratt shared their wedding pictures with Us Weekly magazine. A spread in the Wednesday issue of the mag features photos of the couple throughout the ceremony, along with their handwritten vows to each other.
"We had a beautiful ceremony here at One and Only Palmilla officiated by a minister and photographed by the hotel photographer. We've never been happier," Pratt told Us Weekly upon hearing the fake marriage accusations. "And, like other elopements that happen outside the country, we'll take care of the legal details when we get home."
Montag and Pratt appear just as happy as we have gotten used to from their previous staged photo shoots, but it takes more than a minister and some vows to call yourself legally married. The magazine failed to mention Mexico's marriage laws, which require a process of paperwork and blood tests that take more than a "whim" to complete in order for a marriage to be recognized internationally.
Although a couple can register their marriage up to 10 days after a ceremony, California does not recognize marriage ceremonies outside the United States, according to the state's Department of Public Health. A couple can petition a court later to have their marriage legally recognized.
Asked about the marriage, Rick Rhodes, the couple's publicist appeared rather clueless about the authenticity of the ceremony saying, "I'm not privy to any of that information. If there was a wedding I wasn't invited ... Sorry!" Friends and relatives were equally surprised, and no record of a marriage license in Los Angeles County was public as of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, "Hills" executive producer Liz Gateley told MTV News that the couple's married life and honeymoon will play a prominent part on "The Hills"' upcoming fifth season.
"MTV is currently filming Heidi and Spencer in Mexico, as we were expecting to capture them on vacation," Gateley said. "Fans will be able to see the exclusive footage from the ceremony in an upcoming episode, and we will continue to follow the newlyweds' relationship as it plays out in real life."
