Hamid Akhavan, chief executive of T-Mobile, in an interview for the German weekly publication Focus, said that, although some distribution problems have been encountered along the way, the company has managed to sell about 120,000 units of the iPhone 3G.
As the new device was launched on July 11, this can be considered to be quite an accomplishment for Deutsche Telekom's wireless department.
The chief executive said the smartphone’s sales have gone past what company people were expecting. According to him, the main reason for the occurance of distribution problems was Apple’s decision to simultaneously launch the handset in 22 countries.
T-Mobile commercializes the iPhone in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria; out of the total of 120,000 sold phones, 75,000 units have been purchased in Germany. Hamid Akhavan said the company has received complaints about connection problems only from its Dutch customers; so far the Germans and the Austrians seem to be quite satisfied with the device’s performance.
The new edition of the iPhone uses a new, faster type of Web connection, or so it should. A lot of customers all over the world have been complaining that their recently purchased smartphones keep switching to the old technology (Edge) even in 3G rich environments.
After keeping quiet on the delicate subject for a short while, Apple released an update last week which is supposed to improve the situation; however, whether or not all the problems will be solved remains to be seen.
