On Monday almost 200,000 of travelers at a major train station in southern China who were trying
to get on trains got stranded due to blizzards and ice storms which triggered a
crisis in the transport. Police and soldiers were trying to control the
travelers.
Central, eastern and southern China were hit by heavy snow. These
regions usually have milder winters.
Due to the bad weather conditions transport and communication are very much
affected.
At the main train station in the southern city of Guangzhou,
in Guangdong
province, trains were not able to leave because of the electric trains that
were stopped down the line.
The 200,000 travelers filled the plaza of the train station and a busy road
that was closed while the people were waiting for the train.
According to radio announcements, trains were canceled and ticket sales were
stopped until February 7, the Chinese New Year, the biggest holiday in the country,
the Associated Press informs.
Two weeks ago it started to snow heavily in the Hunan province and that’s when power lines
were cut. Due to ice storms highways were closed and since January 10, 24
people have died, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
Officials tried to control the travelers at the Guangzhou's train station and put the migrant
workers in temporary shelters made in schools and convention centers.
In the commercial hub of Shanghai
police and soldiers were also present in order to control big crowd of
travelers, Reuters reports.
On Monday the government said that it will raise the output of gasoline, coal
and power in order to relieve shortages during the severe winter.
Some of the commuters understood that is only the weather to blame, but
others are not giving up and are still hoping that they will get home for the
holidays, the only time of the year when they can go home.
