Snow Storms Cause 11 Deaths on U.S. Roadways

Powerful snow storms continue to batter the upper Midwest and central U.S. where at least 11 people died and other tens of thousands were left without electricity.

The snow storms caused numerous accidents and reaches as far as Texas, where police reports show that a 50-vehicle motorway pile-up took place.

The frost combined with the heavy snow has felled trees and power lines and also caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

Meteorologists forecasted more heavy snow and storms into the Great Lakes region bordering Canada.

Several car pile-ups took place in the central states and forced police to close major highways. In Minnesota alone, there were at least 300 road accidents. There were also three dead people reported.

Also three people died in similar accidents in Wyoming, three in Wisconsin and two other in Kansas and Texas.

The death toll in Texas came in a pile-up on Interstate 40. Approximately 16 people were rushed to the nearest hospital, where the doctors said two suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driving conditions have slightly eased Monday, but that doesn’t mean safe roadways.

"The roads aren't quite as ice-covered but we're still telling people not to drive unless they have to. The interstate is still slick and the rural roads are really bad," said Sgt. Tim Elve of the Dane County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities of the states hit by the snow storms urged travelers to remain home Sunday but there are worries that travelers will insist on driving Monday to their Christmas destinations regardless of the weather.

"I know it's the holidays but we hope people use some common sense when traveling," said Sgt. Chad Breuer of the Grant County Sheriff's Department in southwest Wisconsin, ABC News reported.
