Snoop Dogg to Make One California Park "A Better Place"

Snoop Dogg has agreed to perform park-maintenance community service as part of his sentence for carrying an illegal weapon in an airport last year.

Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Broadus, pleaded guilty in late September on a charge of possession of a dangerous weapon (the infamous “video prop”) and was sentenced to 160 hours of community service and three years probation.

A year earlier, in September 2006, the rapper was arrested as he walked through security at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport, in California, with a collapsible baton in his luggage.

At the time, Snoop was adamant that the baton was a prop for a video he was filming. Authorities countered it was a dangerous weapon.

Last week, a judge sentenced him to serve his community service time in an unnamed local park in Orange County. The 35-year-old will rake leaves, wash cars and toilets, according to media reports.

According to his attorney Donald Etra, civic duty is at the core of Snoop’s current mood: “He will do whatever it takes. He will be making the park a better place for Orange County.”

Last month, as Etra disclosed the sentence given his client by the judge, he said: “We are very pleased with the outcome. Snoop's goal is to make music, not make court appearances.”

The attorney also commented that the felony conviction would be reduced to a misdemeanor after one year if Snoop Dogg does not violate the law.

All has not been trouble with the law in the recent past for Snoop Doggie Dogg, as the fourth annual VH1 Hip Hop Honors celebrated him for his musical achievements during an extravagant awards show in New York on Oct. 8.

The rapper was honored by the industry’s recognition and commented that his own heroes’ appreciation is extremely gratifying.

“These are guys that I grew up wanting to be like and learning their words and dreaming and hoping and wishing, and now they know who I am and they respect me and they say that my work has put me in the position that I can be commended — it's unbelievable, I can't believe it.”

Among the role models Snoop was referring to was previous honoree and rap legend KRS-One.

As to Snoop’s court-ordered duties towards the community, the name of the park he will be cleaning up and beautifying will not be disclosed so as to allow the rapper to perform his work undisturbed by the media or fans.
