Snoop Dogg Pleads Guilty to Weapon Charge

Rapper Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus, pleaded guilty Thursday on a charge of possession of a dangerous weapon and was sentenced to 160 hours of community service and three years probation, his attorney said.

It was a year ago when Snoop Dogg was arrested at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport when a collapsible baton was found in his luggage. While he initially claimed the baton was a prop for a video he was filming, authorities countered it was a dangerous weapon.

Snoop’s attorney, Donald Etra, said Thursday the felony conviction would be reduced to a misdemeanor after one year if Snoop Dogg does not violate the law.

“We are very pleased with the outcome,” Etra said. “Snoop's goal is to make music, not make court appearances.”

Snoop’s goal will also be to serve his court-ordered 160 hours of community service as well as making a $10,000 charitable donation, as specified by Etra.

After his arrest for possession of an illegal weapon in September 2006, it was only a month before Snoop got in trouble again, this time on charges of drug and gun possession.

The rapper pleaded no contest in April to felony gun and marijuana charges and agreed to five years’ probation and 800 hours of community service.

This year, in March, Snoop was denied a visa by British authorities and could not hold already scheduled concerts in the UK. According to British Home Office rules, foreign citizens can be barred from entering the country if there are concerns about their presence.

He had been arrested in Sweden that month on a suspicion of minor drug offenses and he already had a reputation as troublemaker after a May 2006 incident at Heathrow Airport in London. He and five other men were arrested after a fight broke out when some members of the rapper’s party were denied entry to British Airways’ first-class lounge.

Seven officers received minor injuries and one suffered a fracture to the hand. British Airways said it had banned the rapper from future travel on the airline.
