Following Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin’s recent
statements that The Smashing Pumpkins would hunt for ground-breaking methods of
releasing their music as a result of widespread drops in CD sales, the band
made its first move on Tuesday.
Activision announced that the alternative rock group would
release its next single, “G.L.O.W.,” via the upcoming video game “Guitar Hero:
World Tour.”
The song will be part of a downloadable song pack, which
will also include two Smashing Pumpkins oldies, “1979” and “The Everlasting
Gaze,” and will be available soon after the game’s next installation is
released.
In addition to this, Billy Corgan will also be featured as a
character in the upcoming video game, while the Pumpkins song “Today” is
included in the initial soundtrack.
The Smashing Pumpkins have sold more than 30 million albums,
with approximately 18.25 million units in the United States alone.
Although the Pumpkins broke up in 2000, the group announced
six years later that it was reuniting and recording a new album. Returning
members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin were joined by musicians Jeff
Schroeder (guitar/vocals), Ginger Reyes (bass/vocals) and Lisa Harriton
(keyboard/vocals) in 2007 to tour in support of their new album, “Zeitgeist.”
Although the reunion disc debuted strongly at No. 2, it swiftly fell off the
charts.
The Smashing Pumpkins are joining a rising list of
well-known bands who have released their music via video games.
“Guitar Hero: World Tour” is a spin off of the much popular
“Guitar Hero” franchise, which has sold more than 21 million games worldwide.
