It seems that Adobe is currently focusing on grabbing as much market share in the mobile device market as it can. While its Flash platform and its various iterations have been popular for quite a long time, the company took advantage of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona to draw attention to its latest development plans.
First, Adobe has released plenty of details about the latest version of the Flash platform. Flash 10 brings lots of improvements over the previous generation, and Adobe bets all its money on the Open Screen Project in order to deliver Flash-based products to various platforms.
There are many developers that are part of the OSP right now, with each of them planning to use Flash and AIR in order to release software to both regular computers and mobile devices.
The good news for Adobe is that Flash 10 will be bundled in the Palm Pre smartphone starting fall 2009, which will certainly make the platform very popular, along with making iPhone users envious. Furthermore, virtually every major platform, such as Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, Android OS and webOS will be provided with the latest Flash generation starting this year.
In the mobile device platforms market, Flash still has to deal with its fierce competitors, especially with Sun’s Java Micro Edition. Currently, Flash Lite is still the preferred platform for displaying animations, but developers still fancy Java when developing games and other application for smartphones.
Another big question is whether the iPhone will finally get Flash integration with Adobe’s latest release of the platform. While many analysts believe that Apple’s decision to put the Flash platform in the iPhone is just a matter of time, the Cupertino-based company has not yet provided any details about this.
