With a string of major awards in its pocket, including the top honors at the Golden Globes, from the Producers Guild, the Writers Guild, the Directors Guild and at the BAFTAs, as well, Danny Boyle’s „Slumdog Millionaire” is nearing its final touch of glory, the Academy Awards.
The „little movie who could” sort of production, with a small budget and originally scheduled for straight-to-video release until Fox Searchlight took on the the distribution task, „Slumdog Millionaire” managed to go against all odds and become a major hit.
When the movie swiped the Golden Globe for best drama, co-director Loveleen Tandan said that he was thrilled but also stricken with disbelief, since the production was a small film with no expectations.
At the 81st annual Academy Awards, which are scheduled to be held this Sunday and will be airing on ABC, „Slumdog Millionaire” is running against „Milk,” „Frost/Nixon,” „The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and „The Reader” for the best picture honor.
The movie tells the story of an orphan boy who manages to overcome his life’s hardships and comes very close to winning India’s version of the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” television game show, which only leads to him having to face more trouble as the police believe he cheated on the show.
At the same time, he also tries to find a girl whom he had fallen in love with as a child, the two plot-lines intertwining all throughout the movie.
