The child stars of “Slumdog Millionaire” were celebrated like high-profile figures in India on Thursday, as their fans brought sweets and flower swags, while paparazzi were trying to snap pictures of them.
Police officials and private guards accompanied the six child actors who left the Mumbai airport beaming and holding hands, waving to all the people who had been waiting for their arrival.
While journalists attempted to approach the actors, the children, who were wearing bright marigold garlands around their necks, were greeted by their parents.
“It was amazing, America was amazing,” burbled 8-year-old Rubina Ali, who impersonated Latika, the movie’s heroine, as a young girl.
The little girl was among the numerous cast members of the film who were flown to Los Angeles in order to take part in the Academy Awards ceremony, in which the production helmed by Danny Boyle won eight Oscars, including the top prizes for best picture and best director.
Rubina Ali told reporters that she “loved the pizza there” and explained that she enjoyed the company of the people, who are “so beautiful.” In spite of the fact that she was clearly excited to return to India, she said that she intended to see America again.
Taking into account “Slumdog Millionaire’s” unexpected success, the children have grown to be celebrities in India, as at least a couple of them were taken from slums in order to be cast in the film.
