“Slumdog Millionaire” added to its escalating awards-season poll on Sunday seven awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Set and filmed in India, the movie portrays the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who makes an appearance on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” and exceeds everyone’s expectations, thus stirring suspicions.
The film, which has already won five Critics’ Choice Awards and four Golden Globes, including Best Drama Film, took home BAFTAs for Best Film, Best Editing, Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Sound, Best Music, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography. In addition, it has been nominated for ten Academy Awards.
Other big winners were “In Bruges” (Best Original Screnplay) and WALL-E (Best Animated Film), while Michey Rourke won best Leading Actor for his role in “The Wrestler,” Kate Winslet took home the prize for Best Leading Actress (“The Reader”), Penelope Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for her part in Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and Heath Ledger was awarded with another posthumous supporting actor award for “The Dark Knight.”
However, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” failed to live up to one’s expectations and won only three awards – production design, hair and makeup, and visual effects – out of 11 nominations.
The BAFTAs are usually seen as a predictor of Academy Awards results, in spite of the fact that only two of the past ten years’ Best Picture Oscar winners collected the top prize at the BAFTAs as well.
