“Slumdog Millionaire” Tops the Golden Globe Awards Winners’ List

Sunday, when the Golden Globe Awards were presented, Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” received four prizes, including one for best drama, which now makes it a favorite for the Academy Awards that don’t usually go to a production starring unknown actors.

Actor Heath Ledger was posthumously honored with a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie “The Dark Knight,” while Kate Winslet went home with two trophies.

In the best drama category, “Slumdog Millionaire” outran fellow nominees such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” starring Brad Pitt, “Revolutionary Road” that reunited Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and director Ron Howard’s “Frost/Nixon.”

“Slumdog” also earned the prizes for best screenplay and best musical score, while Danny Boyle himself went home with a Golden Globe for best director. The movie tells the story of an orphan boy who manages to overcome his life’s hardships and comes very close to winning India’s version of the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” television game show, which only leads to him having to face more trouble as the police believe he cheated on the show.

At the same time, he also tries to find a girl whom he had fallen in love with as a child, the two plot-lines intertwining all throughout the movie.

Although “Benjamin Button,” “Frost/Nixon” and “Doubt,” which stars Meryl Streep, had previously got five nods each, none of them won Sunday night.

Woody Allen’s Spanish romance „Vicky Cristina Barcelona” received a Golden Globe for best musical or comedy film.

British actress Sally Hawkins was chosen best actress in a comedy or musical for her role in „Happy-Go-Lucky,” while Colin Farell won the best actor in a comedy or musical prize as a hit man in „In Bruges.”

Mickey Rourke, who made an impressive comeback with his role in „The Wrestler,” earned the Globe for best dramatic actor.
