Sling Media is a company which specializes in audio and video, based in San Mateo, California, which has been bought in 2007 by EchoStar. Sling Media is most famous for bringing on the market in 2005 the Slingbox, a device that connects to any standard audio and/or video signal, and streams the video and audio to a computer over a high-speed broadband internet connection.
The device had some success but needed improving and so the people at Sling Media made other versions which were better in every way than the old one. They introduced the AV, Tuner, and Pro.
Recently, the founders of the company have announced that they are leaving the company and maybe starting their own business. There were no real details concerning this decision, the only comments existing referring to the fact that there is a mismatch between the company’s views and theirs.
Co-founder and chief executive Blake Krikorian and his brother, Jason, are leaving the company and are being followed by Jason Hirshhorn, president of Sling's entertainment group; Ben White, chief creative officer; and Gregg Wilkes, VP of sales. The reasons for this are not known and it is impossible to assume that it may have something to do with how EchoStar is now running the company.
Sling Media is currently working on a device that can let Apple’s iPhone connect to TV cable and stream the content received. Sling Media has also launched a Slingbox for BlackBerry. Sling software has supported the Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and Symbian S60 platforms and in the case of the BlackBerry it requires software 4.5 or greater.
