One person was killed and six other people, including a
child, were injured in shootings on Saturday evening towards the end of the
yearly West Indian parade and festival in Hartford,
authorities said, as reported by the New York Times.
Three people allegedly connected to the incidents which took
place at approximately 6.30 p.m. have been arrested, according to police
officials.
However, the motive of the shootings remained uncertain.
Furthermore, no information about the victims or the suspects was revealed,
except the fact that a child had been among the injured people. The child’s
gender was not specified, nor was his age.
The incident occurred at the end of the parade, an event
which is held in the North End, an area where the majority of Hartford’s West Indian population lives.
According to the New York Times, a woman who attended the
parade, Michele Redding, informed The Associated Press that she heard about ten
shots, which sounded like fireworks. Furthermore, as reported by the same
source, the woman said she saw a man fall and rushed to him in order to give
him first aid. She told The Associated Press that he seemed to be in his early
20s and his breathing was labored while “the blood was gushing from under his
arm.”
The event is attended annually by thousands of people from
around the region and has been celebrated for more than 45 years.
