Single Sign-On Services From Google And Facebook

Google and Facebook have both released services that let users sign in on different sites more easily, using a single user-ID. Google’s new service is called Friend Connect and is currently in beta version. Friend connect will help webmasters who want to add social networking tools to their sites and according to Google adding friend connect is as simple as pasting a piece of code, not requiring vast information in the field of computers.

Friend Connect will allow users to log in to sites by simply using one of their accounts from Google, Yahoo, AOL or OpenID, and other online sites including Plaxo and Google's Orkut.

According to Google the purpose of Friend connect is to make the web a more accessible place and facilitate the interaction between different people from all across the globe. The new Facebook feature was first announced in May and has been, since then, in private beta testing. What is great about Facebook Connect is that users can bring back to the site everything they have accumulated on the third party sites.

Another great thing is that any developer or site can join Facebook Connect, in this way becoming partners and letting users to use their Facebook account information on the respective sites. This is for a general good of being able to have an almost universal signing in profile, making surfing on the net so much easier.

Both Google and Facebook are trying to stay ahead of the game and force innovation in an environment that was built on new practices and technologies.
