Singer Emilio Navaira's Condition Is Improving

After an initial worrying diagnosis, the condition of Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira has been upgraded to fair according to a spokeswoman for the Memorial-Hermann Texas Medical Center.

Three weeks ago, on March 23, he was critically injured when his tour bus slammed into a set of freeway barrels near the interchange of Interstate 610 and U.S. 59 in Bellaire. As a result of the powerful impact, he was thrown through the front windshield and at the time doctors gave him little chance of surviving.

At the time, there was some confusion on who was behind the wheel, the artist or his agent Joe Casias. Police officers announced that Navaira was responsible for the incident.

Hospitals usually guide their reports using three conditions: critical, fair and good. His fans were relieved to hear that the 45-year-old singer is almost half-way through his recovery.

The award-winning singer-songwriter is known for performing both country music and Tejano music. He began his career in 1985, while performing lead vocals for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. In 1987, Cuantas Veces by David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales beat out Alpha by Mexican American Singer Selena for the Album of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards. In 1989 he decided to form his own band, Emilio y Groupo Rio and singed a record deal with Columbia Records.

He has had more than ten singles in the U.S. Billboard Chart and is one of the only performers to reach notable success in the United States and also Mexico. He has recorded more than fifteen studio albums to date.
