As music takes over the
Internet, so does karaoke apparently. Two years after Fox Interactive, a division
of News Corp, which also owns MySpace, purchased kSolo.com, the social
networking site unveiled its latest feature for all those talented users out
there: karaoke.
The reason for the MySpace –
karaoke combination has a perfectly good explanation: music is popular, karaoke
is fun and in case you didn’t know it, it’s also social, because now you can
show everyone how talented you are.
Tom Anderson, MySpace co-founder
and president, told the Associated Press that “it’s not much fun to go to
karaoke alone, but when you do it through the Internet or on your MySpace page,
then you can share it with people,” and that’s what MySpace is all about.
So, if you have a microphone (and
a voice), you’ve got what it takes! The new features offers lyrics to a wide
range of songs, about 2,000 – 3,000, and a recording option.
Anderson also explained why it
took so long to come up with it: “It was quite difficult. The rules and the
licensing changed over time and became more complicated since MySpace is a
global company. There’s different rights in different territories,” AP quoted him
as saying.
kSolo didn’t do too well in the
past two years, since it’s been purchased by Fox Interactive. It remains to be
seen if the popularity of MySpace will do the trick…
America can start singing! (the
feature is expected to become available in other countries as well, but an
exact date remains unknown).
