Next week, Google Inc will be launching the new feature for
its search engine, called Google Suggest, which is aimed at helping users with
their queries. The feature, which the company started developing 4 years ago,
will provide search suggestions while the user is still typing, thus
eliminating keystrokes and obviously saving time. Also, it will automatically
correct typos or misspelled words, rendering the “Did You Mean…?” tool-which,
although useful, has the shortcoming of not providing the suggestions in real
time- obsolete.
Google Suggest, which was created by developers in Google
Labs, has already been made available via Google Labs, Toolbar, Maps and Web
Search, Firefox search bar, the iPhone, the BlackBerry and YouTube also.
Google’s “little helper” does not make its suggestions based
on users’ personal searches, but it does rank them in accordance with the
popularity of common searches.
It also provides the user with the number of Google results
that match a certain suggestion. All the Google Suggest searches are covered
under Google's privacy policy, the company announced.
To benefit from Google Suggest, one must use Internet
Explorer 6.0 (or newer), Netscape 7.1 (or newer), Mozilla 1.4 (or newer),
Firefox 0.8 (or newer), Opera 7.54 (or newer) or Safari 1.2.2 (or newer) and
have JavaScript and cookies enabled. It can also be downloaded in the latest
version of the Google Toolbar for either Internet Explorer or Firefox.
So if there’s something you want to know, Google it. But
remember: your Google searches are no longer anybody’s guess.
