The high number of sick pelicans that continue to appear all along the coast of California has provoked a great deal of confusion in the state. It's a common thing for brown pelicans to be found along the coast of California, but many of the birds are being found in people's backyards, parks, etc., as they get sick one by one.
The pelicans are falling ill at a very fast rate. The International Bird Rescue Center in Cordella, California, has been working to stuck the sick pelicans, being unsuccessful so far. It's very important to find out why are the pelicans leaving their homes and falling ill in order to solve this problem.
Usually, this time of year, around 5 birds are taken in due to sicknesses. However, just last week 50 birds were reportedly sick and being treated. Recent tests showed that neurotoxins were found in three of the six pelicans, but researches couldn't say how the toxins entered the pelicans' system. Experts also think that these symptoms could point to a neurological illness.
The domoic acid is a neurotoxin found in ocean algae, which can cause disorientation in sea birds, as poisoned pelicans can suffer from head weaving and seizures, but no ill pelicans have shown high domoic acid levels.
For now, the staff at the research center can only wait for the results of blood and tissue samples. It might take one to two weeks to get the results of those tests, which have been sent to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lab in Madison. It remains to be seen how this dying pelicans problem will eventually be solved.
