Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early Sunday
after a morning crash in which the "Indiana Jones" star injured his
left hand and knee and two other people were hurt, authorities said.
According to Sgt. Scott Wolf, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office, LaBeouf
was trying to make a left turn at the intersection of La Brea and Fountain
avenues, in West Hollywood, around 3 a.m. when
his Ford F-150 pickup truck crashed into another oncoming vehicle, as quoted by
the Associated Press. The collision caused the actor’s truck to roll over.
"It was immediately apparent to officers responding on the scene that
LaBeouf was intoxicated and he was subsequently placed under arrest," Wolf
said.
Wolf said LaBeouf was held up and released afterwards for violation DUI
(Driving Under the Influence). The 22-year-old Hollywood actor was transported
to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
and received treatment for injuries to his left hand and a knee, as well as a
minor head injury, Wolf added.
The other persons involved in the accident, a woman passenger in LaBeouf's car
and the driver of the other vehicle were not gravely injured. When asked about
their identities, Wolf answered he did not know who the woman or the other
driver were.
At the time of Wolf’s statement, the cause of the crash was still under
investigation.
Melissa Kates, a representative for the actor, said LaBeouf required
surgical intervention to his left and will need a month off to recuperate. Kates
also said he has in plan to go back to work on the set of Transformers 2 within
a month.
The intersection where the accident occurred is the location of "High
Voltage," the tattoo parlor where the TLC reality show "LA Ink"
is filmed.
LaBeouf has had previous encounters with the law, but until now they had
been somewhat harmless — to the point where they only served to uphold his
image as a Hollywood good guy with an attitude.
While intoxicated with alcohol he had a confrontation with guards at a
Walgreens in Chicago
late last year which led to misdemeanor criminal trespassing charges. The
police that operated the arrest in that incident reported that LaBeouf was
"very courteous and polite," and the accusations were dropped due to
the drug store’s intention not to pursue the matter.
LaBeouf was separately cited in February for smoking where he shouldn't in Burbank, but a judge later
dismissed the charge.
Shia Saide LaBeouf is a Daytime Emmy Award and BAFTA Award winner and
starred in last year's summer smash hit "Transformers" and thriller
“Disturbia” — both produced by Steven Spielberg —, while this year has appeared
alongside Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal
Skull," this time with Spielberg as director.
Several media publications have speculated that LaBeouf, whose
screen persona was described by „Time“
magazine as that of the "scrappy kid next door", would become a major film star throughout 2008.
