No stranger to legal trouble, actor Shia LaBeouf was blocked from getting behind the wheel for at least one year due to his refusal of taking a blood-alcohol test following his July 2008 car crash, according to Access Hollywood.
The “Transformers” star was arrested last year in late July when his pickup truck collided with another vehicle and rolled over. LaBeouf refused to take a breathalyzer test but was arrested and booked for suspicion of a driving under influence misdemeanor based on “physical signs.”
Los Angeles County Sherriff Sgt. S. Wolf said at the time that officers responding found it “immediately apparent” that LaBeouf was intoxicated.
Within days from the accident, an investigation conducted by the Los Angeles Couty Sheriff’s Department ruled that at fault for the accident was the other driver, who had ran a red light, thus the 22-year-old actor was cleared of blame.
But the end of September, the investigation was final and LaBeouf was officially off the hook because there was insufficient evidence to charge him with DUI. However, because he refused to take a breathalyzer, he had his driver’s license suspended starting January 17, 2009.
"It was suspended for refusing a chemical test," a Department of Motor Vehicles official was quoted by E! Online as saying, adding that the suspension was “automatic” even though LaBeouf was cleared of any DUI charges after it was determined that the other driver caused his smashup. Under California law, a person's license can be suspended for up to one year if he/she refuses to take a blood, breath or urine test for a suspected DUI.
The accident left LaBeouf badly injured, having to undergo surgery for his left hand. His passenger, “Transformers 2” actress Isabel Lucas, was not injured. He was spotted out and about recently still sporting a brace to prevent further injury.
But of course, one cannot forget Shia LaBeouf’s previous run-ins with the law, which interestingly enough are somewhat charming. In November 2007 he was arrested after he refused to exit a Walgreens in Chicago, despite a bodyguard’s repeated pleas.
He was inebriated but arresting officers found him to be “very courteous and polite,” as they declared at the time. He was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing but the charge was ultimately dropped as the store refused to pursue the matter.
In February 2008, he was once again in trouble, being cited for smoking in a prohibited area in Burbank, California. This charge was also dismissed in the end. He paid a $500 fine.
