Shia LaBeouf Pleads Not Guilty To Illegal Smoking Charges

Before the arrest warrant ordered on actor Shia LaBeouf's name was issued, a lawyer representing the actor appeared in a Burbank, Calif. court to enter a plea on his behalf.

Attorney Michael Norris showed up in court a day late to enter a not guilty plea for a misdemeanor offense of illegal smoking. LaBeouf was not present in the courtroom.

The 21-year-old "Transformer" star, who was given a ticket last month after he was seen lighting up in a non-smoking area in Burbank, was ordered to appear in court on Tuesday but failed to do so. Commissioner Kirkland Nyby issued a $1,000 bench warrant on LaBeouf's name, which has now been dismissed.

A new pretrial hearing has been scheduled for April 24 while a trial date was set sometime in July. If convicted, the star of forthcoming "Indiana Jones" movie is facing a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and six months behind bars.

This isn't LaBeouf's first run-in with the law. He was previously arrested for trespassing at a Chicago Walgreens store after he refused to leave the premises. However, the charges were dropped a month later.

Recalling the incident to Empire magazine, LaBeouf, who can soon be seen alongside Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," said it had been "complete and utter insanity".

"There are lessons in life I need to learn, and I'm learning all of them in front of the public," he added.
