After saying that the 7.9 earthquake which hit China on May 12 was because of the country’s bad karma, Sharon Stone may be banned in cinemas across the country.
The 50-year-old actress and last year’s guest of the Shanghai International Film Festival, made that remark on Thursday during the Cannes Film Festival. She reportedly said that the devastating tremor which killed more than 65,000 people in China came as a consequence of Beijing’s policy towards the province of Tibet ant the Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
Stone called the Dalai Lama "a good friend," another assertion that surely angered the Chinese leaders.
In a short red-carpet interview with Cable Entertainment News of Hong Kong, Sharon Stone said she is not content with the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans, because “I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else."
Then the American Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning actress added that when she heard about the devastating earthquake which hit China she thought it was karma.
“When you're not nice…bad things happen to you,” said the former fashion model.
Stone, who has a long history of political activism, also said that she had recently received a letter from a Tibetan organization planning to do disaster relief work in China. She said that made her cry and also understand that "sometimes you have to learn to put your head down and be of service even to people who are not nice to you."
"That's a big lesson for me," Stone added.
However, her remarks angered the Chinese-language media.
Ng See-Yuen, founder of the UME Cineplex chain and the chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, said Stone’s remarks were very „inappropriate".
The founder of one of China's biggest urban cinema chains said that actors shouldn’t make such political comments, especially when a country is facing disaster with 5 million of its people left homeless.
