The criticism keeps coming and so does the apologizing. After being un-invited from the Shanghai International Film Festival because of her China remarks last month, Sharon Stone has now issued a new apology.
Actress Sharon Stone issued a new statement Wednesday in an attempt to “set the record straight about what I feel in my heart and end all of the misunderstandings,” as quoted by People magazine.
She was of course referring to comments she made on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival last month, suggesting that the devastating May 12 earthquake in China was possibly a result of “karma,” due to the country’s relationship with Tibet and the Dalai Lama.
She also called the Dalai Lama, whom China considers a traitor, a “good friend.”
The public outrage in China was immediate, powerful and as time shows it, long lasting. The most recent consequence of Stone’s unfortunate remarks is an announcement from organizers of the Shanghai International Film Festival, who said this week the actress was not invited to the event. She was there last year.
Stone apologized last month, saying she was “deeply sorry and sad about hurting Chinese people.”
Wednesday, she apologized again, saying she “misspoke” and that she “could not be more regretful of that mistake.”
Calling her words “an accident of my distraction” and “a product of news sensationalism,” she reiterated that she feels “deeply saddened by the pain that this whole situation has caused the victims of the devastating earthquake in China.”
Following the public reaction to her remarks, French fashion house Christian Dior promptly cancelled its collaboration with Stone for Chinese ads. The Hollywood Reporter informed that one of China’s biggest cinema chains stated it would not show her films in its theaters.
While in Cannes, Stone raised $10 million for AIDS research charity AmFAR, the American Foundation for Aids Research founded by Elizabeth Taylor in 1985.
