NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal decided to file for divorce from his wife of nearly five years, Shaunie, his attorney said Tuesday night.
According to O’Neal’s lawyer, Ira Elegant, the papers have been filed in a Miami court on Tuesday. It was not immediately known who is representing Shaunie Nelson O’Neal in the case.
According to the petition the "marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken," while Shaq accuses his estranged wife of being ''secretive about her assets, particularly with respect to certain properties owned or titled in either [her] name alone or in other entities,'' and refers to the Star Island mansion as "the former marital home," Miami Herald reported.
Although O’Neal, 34, and Nelson, 32, have a "Cohabitation/Prenuptial Agreement and Acknowledgment of Property Disclosure and Waiver of Further Disclosure," O’Neal asked the court to order her to give a "correct accounting of all money, funds, stocks, bonds, and other securities (including bearer securities)" acquired during the marriage.
O’Neal’s Miami Heat coach Pat Riley was quoted by Sun-Sentinel.com as saying he was "devastated" by the news of O’Neal’s divorce.
"I'm really saddened by the news," Riley said in the radio interview. "I've talked to Shaq a couple of times. I really wasn't aware that this was going to happen. But he will work it out; they will work it out, as most people do,” he added.
The two who have four children together, Shareef, 7, Amirah, 5, Shaqir, 4, and Me'Arah, 1, got married in December 2002 during a lavish ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Shaq has a daughter, Taahirah, and Shaunie has a son, Myles, from previous relationships.
Shaq recommends that his wife be "primary residential custodian" of their children and asks for "liberal rights of visitation," the Herald reported.
