Who would have seen this coming? Shania Twain and husband Robert “Mutt” Lange, connected by 14 years of marriage and the singer’s memorable “You’re Still the One” ballad are separating.
Shania Twain’s representative has confirmed the news to People magazine, in one very concise statement: “Shania Twain and her husband, music producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange, are separating after 14 years of marriage. This is a private matter and there will be no further comment at this time.”
Twain, 42, and Lange, 59, married in 1993. They have one child, 6-year-old son Eja D’Angelo. It was a whirlwind romance for the two, as they tied the knot half a year after first meeting.
Shania, which is a stage name for the singer, whose real name is Eileen Edwards (Shania is an Ojibwa word meaning “I'm on my way”) and Lange have collaborated professionally with great success. The rock producer has also worked with Def Leppard, Bryan Adams and Foreigner.
About seven years ago, the couple moved to Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, where they have led a quiet life, free from the perils of celebrity. Lange has always been known as a reclusive person, shying away from the spotlight. Shania herself retreated in early 2000, upon moving to Europe.
At the time, the Canadian-born singer explained her withdrawal as a need to take a break from the “whole ‘Shania’ thing.”
Her most recent musical venture was recording “You Needed Me” on Canadian country star Anne Murray’s “Duets: Friends & Legends” album last year.
As to talk of a new album, the possible release date remains uncertain.
Shania told Redbook magazine in December that it was difficult for her to handle fame. “I’m not naturally a spotlight person,” she said, referring to a potential return to the public eye. “[But] I don’t mind being the center of attention in a controlled, comfortable environment.”
