The music industry has been recently struck by another
tragedy as vice-president of Def Jam records, Shakir Stewart, committed suicide
Saturday, November 1st.
The very influential music producer, successor of Jay-Z at the head of the
label, was found dead in his apartment. It seems that Stewart shot himself,
causing a tragedy as he was loved by many and, friends say, he was an
extraordinary person and a great father. Def Jam records have expressed their
regrets for the early passing away of their colleague and dear friend.
Everybody’s prayers go to Stewart’s family, who should be strong in order to
leave this behind and go on.
Def Jam was originally founded by Russel Simmons and Rick
Rubin, the company’s first released single being from the rock band Hose. The
first single promoted under the Def Jam logo was T La Rock & Jazzy Jay
"It's Yours” and in 1984 Beastie Boys and LL Cool J were promoting their
songs through Def Jam.
Because of the increasing success of the company they eventually managed to cut
a distribution deal with CBS Records. Though Def Jam is widely known for
promoting hip-hop artists, the company has a history of also promoting rock
bands. Def Jam signed a deal with legendary thrash metal band Slayer and with
Public Enemy, which created a beneficial controversy for the arising company.
The death of Shakir Stewart is indeed a tragedy and it
brings sadness on all of those who have known him or admired him.
