Considered the "fifth lady on the show," fashion has always been one of the major things everyone loves about "Sex and the City" and now, ten years later after the original series premiered on HBO, the "Sex and the City Movie" maintains all that sometimes shocking but consistently cutting-edge and totally trend-setting style featured in every episode.
Responsible for sparking dozens of fashion trends, from oversized floral corsages to towering Jimmy Choo stilettos, the show and its stylist, famous Patricia Field, have been among the globe's most influential trendsetters for a decade, developing strong and distinct styles for each of the characters.
The "Sex and the City Movie" premieres in five days, but everyone has kept mum on how good (or bad) it is, focusing a lot on the fashion side of the flick, which is actually expected to earn some awards.
Carrie's 81 costume changes, which make up perhaps the most metaphorical wardrobe in cinematic history, is something to look forward to in the movie. For half of the film she comes off as a polished, uberfashionable grown-up; the other half, she's the quirky, experimental fashion trailblazer/victim. To accessorize all that couture, H Stern loaned more than 300 pieces of jewelry to the movie.
Enormously influential on fashion, the show became an obsession not only for the fans but also for fashion buyers, designers and retailers, who have been trawling magazines and the internet for months, hoping for a sneak peek of the clothes and accessories chosen by Field.
"Of course it's been on our radar," said Myer fashion boss Judy Coomber. "The movie has been so highly anticipated and we just know it will have a big influence on fashion going forward, particularly as we move into summer. I don't think anybody who is in the fashion industry would miss this movie."
Beginning in the present, not where it left off four years ago, the movie finds Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her three gal pals, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha (Kim Cattrall) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) at crossroads. Carrie is engaged to Mr. Big and planning a major New York wedding. Miranda is trying to work out a balance between her family life and career. Samantha relocated to Los Angeles to be with Smith, who's became a TV star in the meantime, while Charlotte is happily married to Harry and the mother of their adopted daughter Lily.
