Seven people suffered injuries Sunday evening when a truck drove
through the warning gates at a train crossing 10 miles east of Suisun.
According to Karina Romero, an Amtrak representative, the truck that was delivering
furniture smashed into the dining car of Amtrak Capitol Corridor Train No. 736 in
the point where Fry Road
in Dixon
crosses the train tracks shortly before 5 p.m. The train, transporting 220
passengers, was heading from San Jose to Sacramento. When the
collision with the truck occurred, the train had two stops remaining in Davis and Sacramento.
The impact caused substantial damage to the train car, Romero said.
"Some windows were broken and (the driver) hit right on the door, so
that car isn't going to be usable for a while."
The 22-year-old truck driver from Vacaville,
Anthony Aguas, told California Highway Patrol officials that he tried to break
when the lowering arm went down, but slided and crashed through the railway barrier
and into the train. Emergency crews said that although his vehicle was entirely
wrecked, he suffered only minor cuts and bruises.
Two Amtrak workers and five passengers that suffered non-life threatening
injuries were taken to Vaca
Valley Hospital,
Romero said.
The rest of the passengers boarded train No. 738, which was also on its way
to Sacramento.
Passengers on the damaged train were delayed two-and-a-half hours as train No.
738 reached Sacramento
an hour and 40 minutes late.
"Grade crossing accidents are fairly common," Romero said, indicating
that a car hit an Amtrak train Thursday between Ventura
and Oxnard in Southern
California. "Although normally, it's a locomotive involved in
the accident and not a car and the middle of the train."
