The Seton Hall University
campus in South Orange, N.J., was lockdown for a while Monday night
after a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound was found sitting in a vehicle,
officials said.
According to Paul Loriquet, spokesperson for the Essex
County Prosecutor’s Office, the man was identified as Anthony Papalia, 22, of Aberdeen, the New York
Times Reported.
The man was not a Seton Hall student, but apparently, he was
trying to visit a female student who was enrolled at the university, school
spokesperson, Thomas White said, according to the Times.
Preliminary reports show that Papalia was inside a vehicle
near the Xavier Hall dormitory when he shot himself in the stomach around 8:30
p.m. He was immediately rushed to University
Hospital in Newark, where he was listed in fair condition
late Monday night, hospital representative Rogers Ramsey said.
Following the incident, university officials placed the
campus under lockdown for nearly two hours and sent e-mail and text messages
warning students to stay in their rooms while police investigated. Also,
university officials blocked all entrances to the campus.
It was not immediately known what the motif of the shooting
was, although Loriquet said there might have been a dispute between the
parties.
