The Sony Ericsson Open ended big
for Serena Williams, after defeating competitor Jelena Jankovic, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3
on Saturday in the women’s final, for her fifth Key Biscayne title.
The eighth seeder American
player struggled in the second set, as Jankovic claimed it (5-7) after one
clear victory in the first set for Williams (6-1), which prepared the crowd for
a disputed set 3. The match ended in two hours and 25 minutes after Williams
claimed the third set 6-3.
“I feel really comfortable here
and I’ve been trying to feel this comfortable at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon
which I’m bound to,” said the winner after the award ceremony. “I’m right on
schedule to feel comfortable there too.”
After Jankovic got back in her
game and managed to recover after the first set: “I thought I had like 15 match
points,” Serena said laughing. “I’m glad to know I wasn’t. A couple of shots
she hit really well, and then a couple of times I made some mistakes and …. It was
weird.”
The American finalists admitted to
getting tight during the match, but only because of her desire to make this a victory:
“My whole life is dedicated to nothing but tennis,” she said. “I’ve been
working so hard and I feel like everything will come together in time.”
In her blog, Williams said it’s
been a long way to go, especially as just two weeks ago she though she won’t be
able to compete, but winning the Sony Ericsson Open is “pretty cool.”
