Serbia Ready for Compromise Solution in Kosovo Dispute

Serbian President Boris Tadic said Thursday that Serbia is prepared to accept a compromise solution after a new round of negotiations with Kosovo representatives, but warned that a unilateral proclamation of independence would have unpredictable consequences.

“We therefore call on the legitimate representatives of Kosovo Albanians to proceed to the resumed negotiations without prejudicing the outcome so that a compromise solution, acceptable to both parties, could be achieved, a solution that would lead to long-term Serbian-Albanian reconciliation,” Tadic said before the United Nations General Assembly.

Tadic outlined that Pristina would create a dangerous precedent by declaring independence and after that “the international legal order would never be the same.”

If negotiations between Pristina and Belgrade officials do not provide the expected outcome, the ethnic Albanians are determined to declare independence on December 11, reports said.

The Serbian leader warned that other groups struggling for sovereignty would follow Kosovo’s example and bring instability in numerous regions across the globe.

The Belgrade government said it will never agree with Kosovo’s independence, but is willing to accept autonomy in the province administered by the UN in collaboration with NATO forces and under the protection of the European Union.

Envoys from the United States, Russia, Germany, Britain, Italy and France were scheduled to meet late Thursday in New York to discuss the proposals made by both sides in order to provide a possible solution to the dispute.

The high-ranked government officials will meet at United Nations headquarters and their meeting will be followed on Friday by direct talks between Belgrade and Pristina officials to be hosted by the Liaison Office of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union to the UN.
