Although many studios avoid opening movies at the beginning
of the year, that doesn’t mean that no movie was played in theatres this time
of the year.
For the Christmas Holiday “National Treasure: Book of
Secrets” held the No.1 position at the box office in the first weekend of 2008.
It had $55.4 million in ticket sales and so far earned $143 million, Reuters
informs.
According to the studio, Nicolas Cage’s adventure to clear
his family name and Lincoln’s assassination
was at the top of the movies in the country for two weekends in a row.
The second spot was occupied by Fox's movie "Alvin
and the Chipmunks" which earned $42.2 million.
Will Smith’s sci-fi thriller “I Am Legend” was next with $38
million.
Political comedy, "Charlie Wilson's War" starring
Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, occupied fourth position with earnings of $ 20.5
million. Up to date "Charlie Wilson's War" won $42 million.
Fox Searchlight's “Juno”, about a pregnant teen who is
searching for the perfect parents for her baby, was at No. 5 and earned $15.7
million, according to New York Daily News.
The movie was screened in just 1,014 theaters.
The rest of the box office looks like this: at no. 6 was "The
Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," no 7."Aliens vs. Predator:
Requiem," no. 8 "P.S. I Love You," no.9 "Sweeney Todd"
and at no. 10 "Enchanted."
The top three movies, “National Treasure,” “Alvin” and “I Am
Legend” earned half a billion dollars altogether.
