Senator Kennedy “Feeling Well” After Seizure during Lunch with President

U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, who suffered a seizure while attending a post-inaugural lunch with President Obama and members of Congress on Tuesday, is “feeling well,” said his Senate office quoting the doctor who has been treating him.

Sen. Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, was rushed with an ambulance to Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Edward F. Aulisi, chairman of neurosurgery at the hospital, said the senator suffered the sudden seizure due to “simple fatigue.” He added that the 76-year-old Massachusetts Senator was awake and talking with family and friends.

Senator Kennedy, D-Mass., will most likely be released from hospital this morning. U.S. President Barack Obama did not forget about Mr. Kennedy and reportedly called by phone to check on him after he was admitted into the hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, visited him at the hospital. He said Mr.Kennedy was accompanied by his wife Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and son, Rep. Patrick Kennedy.

According to witnesses who attended the presidential lunch, Kennedy collapsed during the meal, but managed to recover enough to smile and talk from the stretcher to his colleagues.

Edward Kennedy, one of the Senate’s most respected members, was diagnosed with malignant brain tumor and underwent brain surgery in June. He has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments since then.

“This is a joyous time. But it's also a sobering time. And my prayers are with him and his family," President Obama told the crowd of more than 200 politicians attending the festive luncheon which is held every four years after the presidential swearing in.
