With just a few days after the announcement of his recently
found brain tumor, Senator Edward M. Kennedy left Boston’s Massachusetts
General Hospital yesterday. On his way to his car he smiled for the media and
for all the well-wishers, signaling a thumbs-up.
The senator suffered a seizure while visiting his family’s
Hyannisport compound and was rushed to Boston in a helicopter on Sunday
morning.
The Boston Globe issued a statement saying that Senator
Kennedy had a remarkably quick recovery from his procedure done three days ago
and the hospital’s doctors decided that it was safe for him to be released
ahead of schedule.
Mr. Kennedy will rest in his family compound in
Hyannisport on Cape Cod. During this time, test results are expected in order for
the doctors to figure out the treatment’s direction.
Doctor Deepa Subramaniam, Georgetown University’s director
of the Lombardi Cancer Center in Washington said that one of their main
concerns is if Mr. Kennedy’s tumor is located in a place that will allow a safe
surgery, which would significantly improve the chances for a long term success.
She also added that only about 40 percent of the tumors are operable.
Edward M. Kennedy is the second-longest serving Democratic senator
still in Congress and the last surviving brother of the American political
dynasty, with both his brothers assassinated – President John F. Kennedy in
1963 and Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968.
The American Cancer Society estimates that this year, close
to 21,800 tumors of the brain or spinal cord will be identified. Out of the
whole list, approximately 13,000 (7,500 men and 5,500 women) will die due to
their tumors.
