Sen. Stanebow's Husband Paid Hooker for Oral Sex

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s husband acknowledged the fact that he arranged through the Internet a rendezvous with a hooker. He paid $150 and met the girl with whom he slept at a metropolitan Detroit hotel, police said on Wednesday.

Thomas Athans has reportedly run into police officers investigating prostitution at the hotel, The Associated Press reported.

The co-founder of the liberal TalkUSA Radio network issued a statement through his attorney in which he apologized for his actions.

Stabenow, who married Athans in 2003, thanked during an interview with the AP to those who support her and added that “this is a family matter that is very difficult but we are going to work through it."

"I think it's important to continue to do my job and to focus on people in Michigan who are hurting every day and expect that I'm going to fight for them every day," she said.

Police had set up a stakeout at the hotel called Residence Inn and saw Athans enter the room Feb. 26 and leave 15 minutes later. Police had previously received information of prostitution at a room there.

As he was leaving in his car, Athans was stopped by officers and informed about the stakeout. He then admitted of using the Internet to set up a date with the hooker and paid $150 for oral sex, the police report said.

Athans doesn’t face sex related charge, but police mailed him a ticket for driving with a suspended license.

The police report shows that Athans was very cooperative and "didn't drop any names or ask for preferential treatment," according to department spokesman Lt. Gerry Scherlinck.

The hooker identified as Alycia Martin, was arrested for involvement in a prostitution ring.

Stabenow, a 57-year-old Democrat from Lansing, wouldn’t talk to reporters about her marital problems. She refused to say whether she and her husband will separate or not.

Athan’s prostitution story continues a series of sex scandals involving top level politicians. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was forced to resign last month after set up a rendezvous with a hooker belonging to a high-price prostitution ring and paid with public money.

Then followed his replacement, David Patterson, who admitted he and his wife had extramarital love affairs during a harsh period of their marriage.
