'Semi-Pro' Might Make It To The Top At Box Office

It looks like a sure win for Will Ferrell as his basketball comedy opens this Friday in over 3,000 theaters in United States and Canada via New Line Cinema.

“Semi-Pro” is expected to win about $30 million in the weekend.

“Blades of Glory” his comedy on figure skating scored $33 million in March 2007and finished with $118.6 million.

With “Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby,” the spoof on NASCAR, Ferrell opened with $47 million and finished with $148.2 million.

The movie is set in 1976 and Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, an owner, player and coach of the Flint Michigan Tropics, the worst basketball team in history.

Moon achieved his dream of having his own basketball team after he recorded a success with one hit wonder, “Love Me Sexy.”

As the American Basketball Association announce that it will merge with NBA and that only four teams will be qualified, Moon sees himself in a difficult position: to win the game in order to survive.

“The Other Boleyn Girl” also to be released this Friday, will probably earn somewhere between $8 million-$9 million. The film, starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman as the two Boleyn sisters who fight for the affection of King Henry VIII, will open in 1,200 theatres; will be probably more appealing to the women rather than the men. The movie had its premiere recently at the Berlin Film Festival.

Christina’s Ricci “Penelope” will open this Friday in about 1,200 theaters too. The romantic fantasy will probably get $5 million at the box office.

The No. 1 from last weekend “Vantage Point” might slip to number two this weekend with a win of almost 12 million.
