"Secret Talents of the Stars" Nipped in the Bud

CBS cancelled its new reality show, “Secret Talents of the Stars,” after only one episode which had less than stellar ratings.

“Secret Talents of the Stars” premiered on April 8 and was quickly cancelled after one miserably rated episode. The program was hosted by “Seinfeld” regular John O’Hurley and featured sixteen celebrities who were meant to compete against each other in order to determine who has the best unknown talent.

Competitors were meant to show off their skills in weekly episodes – practicing and then performing live. They were to be eliminated, one by one, until only one was left. Their elimination was determined by the three judges’ appraisals (Debbie Reynolds, Brian McKnight, and Gavin Polone) and viewer vote.

The show was canceled Thursday by the CBS network. Two nights before, country singer Clint Black had tried his hand at stand-up comedy. Olympic figure skater Sasha Cohen performed as a contortionist, joined by the New Shanghai Circus. Actor George Takei (Mr. Sulu on “Star Trek”) tuned his voice to country music.

Some $.6 million viewers watched the show’s debut. CBS said it would replace “Secret Talents” for the next two weeks with “48 Hours Mysteries,” reports Reuters. New episodes of the returning legal drama “Shark” would fill up the remainder of the season.

Among the celebrities whose secret talents will remain secret are Danny Bonaduce, who would have shown off his gift for unicycling; singer Mya, who would have tap danced; and “The Young and the Restless” actor Joshua Morrow, whose secret talent apparently is rock-n-roll juggling.

Former Mrs. Donald Trump, Marla Maples, intended to perform a gymnastics routine, while Playboy model Bridget Marquardt would have demonstrated her abilities with the bungee trapeze.

This is not the first casualty for CBS. Earlier this season, the network canceled “Viva Laughlin,” a musical drama executive produced by Hugh Jackman, who also appeared in the show. Two low rated episodes were sufficient to determine a cancellation.
