A secret court hearing was held Thursday by the court commissioner who
placed Britney Spears under conservatorship.
Court commissioner, Reva Goets held the session in Los
Angeles Superior Court only a day after Britney was suddenly released from the
mental ward at UCLA
Medical Center, the Associated Press reported.
After placing her under conservatorship, Goets named James Spears, her father, as
conservator of his daughter.
Courts decide to place people under conservatorship when it
is considered they cannot take care of themselves or their affairs anymore.
No clear reason was given for the quick court meeting, but,
according to the New York Daily News, James Spears’ attorneys together with
Andrew Wallet, who is part of conservatorship and his daughter’s appointed lawyer,
were hoping to strengthen control over Britney’s affairs.
Britney did not attend the hearing and neither her parents.
Britney was taken to the UCLA Medical
Center in the early
morning hours of January 31 under police escort and put under supervision for
72 hours. Unfortunately, her psychiatrist Dr. Deborah Nadel prolonged Britney’s
visit at the hospital to 14 days over the last weekend.
Luckily, she has been released from the mental ward
Wednesday after nearly a week of treatment for mental problems. Apparently,
doctors decided that she is no immediate threat to herself and other, which
means they lost the grounds to hold her institutionalized against her will.
Her parents released a statement late Wednesday evening, in
which they showed their concern over their daughter’s mental crisis.
“As parents of an adult child in the throws of a mental
health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over
the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was
released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe,”
Jamie and Lynne Spears said.
They also added that they would like the “court’s orders to
be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted.”
