Second Suspect Arrested in UNC killing

Authorities announced they have arrested the second suspect wanted in the killing of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Marie Carson.

Lawrence Alvin Lovette Jr., 17, was detained by Durham Patrol and SWAT officers after they surrounded his house in Hillsborough. Police had received an anonymous tip that Lovette was to be found there, Durham police Lt. Robert McLaughlin Jr. informed the Associated Press.

Police arrested Demario James Atwater, 21, the other suspect, on Wednesday, at a Durham residence. Both suspects are charged with first-degree murder in Carson’s death.

On March 5, around 5 a.m., police in North Carolina found Eve Carson dead in a suburban neighborhood near her campus. She had been shot several times, including once in the head. Her car was found the next day, near the place where she lived.

In two pictures taken at an ATM machine, Lovette seems to be driving Carson’s car, with Atwater on the back seat.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran refused to say the location of the ATM machine and the time when the photos were taken.

State records reveal that the two suspects had been involved in illegal activities in the past. According to the Associated Press, Lovette was given a suspended sentence in January for breaking and entering, as well as for misdemeanor larceny. Atwater was also charged with felony breaking and entering in 2005 and illegal possession of firearm in 2007.

Eve Carson was an appreciated student at the North Carolina University, where she was majoring in political science and biology. The campus was grieved after the news of her death. The university said Wednesday a third memorial service in honor of Carson will be held next week.

"Our interests are in seeing justice served and helping our community during this difficult time," university Chancellor James Moeser said in a statement. "We are thankful for all of the expressions of support pouring in for the Carolina family and our local community in these past few days. Those kind thoughts and prayers for Eve Carson's family and our community have made a difference."
