The authorities continue to investigate the salmonella outbreak. Representatives at the company that manufactured the infested peanut butter and other peanut-based products are expected to state under oath this morning at the U.S. Congress.
After more than 600 people were given medical support and eight people died due to the infested peanut products, the U.S. institutions are trying to find out the causes that led to the outburst. Following the early investigations, 1,845 peanut-based products were removed from stores across the country, leading many people to question about the conditions in which these products were manufactured.
Experts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation examined one of the facilities of the Peanut Corporation of America in Blakely, Georgia, on Monday, as a part of the criminal investigation of the company. On Wednesday morning, another facility of Peanut Corporation announced that it would temporarily close its doors in order to let the authorities investigate the case.
While the factories are being examined, representatives at food safety non-government organizations blame the government for its lack of reaction. Nancy Donley from the organization Safe Tables Our Priority, stated that the government should publicly announce that these outbursts should be stopped right away.
The FDA has also sent experts in order to collect samples from the factories in Texas and Georgia. According to the analysis, the samples contained salmonella. Officials stated that other samples would be taken from the facilities, along with further investigations to see who was responsible for the quality control in the factories.
