Games used to be about entertainment, about blowing off some steam after a hard day at work or, even, about intriguing stories that captivated the player. Today, though such games still exist, people can take a look at gaming and

see that people are starting to move more and more towards the virtual reality. Second Life is a 3D game that simulates life, by allowing players to fully customize how their characters look and wonder the virtual world doing things that can easily be done in the real world, with the possible exception of flying like a bird and looking like a magical creature.

The game focuses on real connections between players. People have met through Second Life, many have started a relationship, people have voted with the use of this game and, recently, two people divorced because of the virtual world. Amy Taylor and Dave Pollard divorced after Taylor discovered that Pollard’s Second Life character was virtually cheating on her.

Though some research shows that it really doesn’t matter, from a psychological point of view, it someone betrays your love in reality or just in thought, in this case in the virtual world, some still think that the situation is a bit exaggerated. What happened to authentic human communication? Face to face talk, not through the use of a computer or through virtual alter egos?

The gaming world is starting to take its toll on humanity as more bizarre cases related to video games are happening. A British truck driver murdered his wife because she changed her Facebook status from “commited” to “single.” A woman in the US was actually plotting the abduction of her boyfriend which she met through Second Life. Games are entertainment, drama is for the real world.
