Joey and Erin Maynard of Salem, North Carolina, are the proud parents of what might be the second heaviest newborn twins since 1900. Erin Maynard gave birth to them Tuesday, at the Forsyth Medical Center.

The twins have a combined weigh of 23 pounds and 1 ounce and reach 4 feet in length, if laid end to end. They were born through Cesarean section. The first of the two was the boy, Sean William Maynard, who weighted in at 10 pounds and 14 ounces, followed two minutes later by the girl, Abigail Rose Maynard, who topped him weighting 12 pounds, 3 ounces.

The parents said that they knew that the babies were going to be big, as an ultrasound test that was carried on a couple of weeks ago showed that the babies weighted about 18 pounds combined. However, they were not expecting to be the parents of an almost record breaking set of twins.

The heaviest twins that appear in a hospital record were born in 1927 in Arkansas. Their combined weight was 27 pounds and 12 ounces. Up until now, they seem to be the only twins to top Sean and Abigail Maynard.

The North Carolina twins were born at 38 weeks and 3 days into the pregnancy. The usual time that single babies are born is 40 weeks after the mother has been fertilized.

The babies were first shown during a press conference on Friday. Hospital officials announced that the two are in good health and that they are normally developed.
