Los Angeles - Actor Sean Penn has filed for legal separation from his wife of 13 years, Robin Wright Penn, People magazine reported Thursday.

Penn filed the paperwork last week in Marin County, California, seeking joint physical and legal custody of their children, daughter Dylan, 18 and son Hopper, 15. He asked that the court not award any spousal support to Wright Penn.

The couple, Penn, 48, and Wright Penn, 43, previously started divorce proceedings in December 2007 but reconciled four months later.

The couple have been together since the early 1990's following Penn's divorce from Madonna. They married in 1996 and starred together in several films, including 1997's She's So Lovely and Hurlyburly in 1998.
