A former associate of the hip hop mogul filed a lawsuit against Sean Diddy Combs claiming the rapper owes him over $19 million for music created by the slain rapper Christopher Notorious B.I.G. Wallace.
Apparently, James Sabatino flew Wallace to Miami in 1994, where he recorded vocals for Combs, both Billboard and the Associated Press reported. No contracted was ever signed but Sabatino claims it was common knowledge that it was he owned the vocals since he paid for Wallace’s studio time and travel expenses.
Following Wallace’s highly publicized unsolved homicide in 1997, Diddy agreed to buy the music and video footage from Sabatino for $200,000 and reportedly paid $25,000 delaying the rest of the payment because Sabatino was named a "person of interest" in Biggy's murder, the lawsuit alleges. He was supposed to meet Wallace on the night of his death but Wallace never showed up. Combs didn’t want his name associated with a person of interest in the killing of the Notorious B.I.G. in case their deal would be made public.
This isn’t the first time Diddy is having trouble with the way he chose to handle Notorious B.I.G.'s music after his death. Last year he released a "duets" album called "Duets: The Final Chapter," which was widely seen as a cynical exploitation of B.I.G’s legacy, featuring collaborations with artists he never would have worked with.
