Ex Velved Revolver singer Scott Weiland, who last month was ordered to serve 8 days behind bars stemming from late last year's DUI arrest, presented himself to the Van Nuys, California lockup to begin serving his time.

The 40-year-old Stone Temple Pilots frontman turned himself in Monday morning and was booked shortly after noon, according to his booking sheet. He was officially checked in at 6:41 p.m. but by 6:54 p.m. he was a free man, Access Hollywood reported.

On April 28, Weiland, who is known to have struggled with substance abuse off-and-on for years, was sentenced to eight days in jail, four months' probation and ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol program and pay almost $2000 in fines, after pleading no contest to a drink driving charge.

The singer, who gained fame as the lead singer of 1990s band Stone Temple Pilots, whom he recently reunited after parting ways with Velvet Revolver on rather sour terms, had until May 28 to serve his jail term.

In November last year, he was arrested on a San Fernando Valley freeway after crashing his car and failing sobriety tests. According to police reports at that time, no one was injured in the crash.

It was the second DUI conviction for Weiland and hardly his first substance-related problems ever. He was convicted of DUI after a 2003 arrest in Hollywood, arrested on domestic-violence charges in 2001, and jailed for drug offenses in the 1990s.
