Scientists Unearth Pre-Historic Snake

Scientists have unearthed the world’s largest snake, which stretched 42 to 45 feet long, while it weighed over 2,500 pounds.

The fossils of the pre-historic snake were found in northeastern Colombia, snake expert Jack Conrad of the American Museum of Natural History in New York having stated that it was heavier than a bison and longer than a city bus, in a burst of excitement at learning about the discovery.

Paleontologist Jason Head of the University of Toronto Missisauga, impressed by the snake’s dimensions as well, said that the beast probably preyed on ancient relatives of crocodiles that inhabited the rainforest approximately 58 million to 60 million years ago.

Head is also the senior author of a report concerning the discovery, which was published in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature.

The scientists who found the pre-historic snake named it Titanoboa cerrejonensis, which means titanic boa from Cerrejon, the area where the fossils were unearthed.

Jason Head informed that even though the snake was related to the boa constrictors of our days, his behavior resembled that of an anaconda more, adding that it used to spend most of its time in the water, being able to both slither on land and swim.

Titanoboa cerrejonensis has broken the record for snake length by approximately 11 feet, which had been held by a creature that lived about 40 million years ago in Egypt, according to Head.

The snake was first unveiled back in 2007 at the University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.
